POSITION OUTLINE

The Assistant Mother moves between SOS Family Homes, relieving SOS Mothers who are on leave or who require her assistant. The SOS Mother and Assistant Mother work together as a team to provide the best possible upbringing for the children under their care. The Assistant Mother is an important member of the SOS Families, and should be a caring, understanding, mature and responsible figure, who the children can see as their Aunt.

 

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Act as an Assistant to SOS Mothers
    • Work together with the SOS Mother, as a team for the best interests of the children.
    • Should be fully aware of the responsibilities of a SOS Mother and replace the SOS Mother whenever she is absent from the Family Home. During the Mother’s leave or other days off from the Village, must live Family Home and perform all of the Mother’s functions.
  2. Assist the SOS Mother in Ensuring the Well-Being of the Children
    • Be sensitive to and understanding of the needs of the children.
    • Assist the Mother in ensuring the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the child.
    • Know and support the right and responsibilities of a child.
    • Spend quality time with each individual child, as agreed in her assigned households.
    • Use appropriate parenting skills for each child’ development.
  3. Support the SOS Mother in Guiding the Children to take Responsivity
    • Help to ensure that the children do the tasks which they are assigned.
    • Allow the children to solve their own problems, as appropriate.
    • Encourage further education and training.
  4. Assist the SOS Mother with Household Tasks
    • Assist the SOS Mother to carry out all household tasks, do that the household is maintained in excellent condition and quality time is available for the children.
    • Learn how to correctly use and care for the household equipment and appliances.
    • Support the Mother in training the children to assist with household chores.
    • Maintain a high standard of safety.
    • Discusses any plans and problems with the Mother and/or the Village Father.
  5. Be an Aunt to the Village Children
    • Show healthy affection to the children.
    • Be available for the children, offering them advice, guidance and support through difficult times in their lives.
    • Practice basic life and communication skills, such as conflict management, self-esteem building and forming relationships.
    • Provide a positive role model for the children. Behave in an exemplary manner.
    • Age: 30 to 45 Years
  6. Develop Her Own Personal Well-Being
    • Maintain personal physical fitness, energetic and healthy body to be able to perform her duties and tasks with minimal stress.
    • Maintain her mental, social, intellectual and spiritual well-being.
    • Take responsibility for her actions, attitude, behavior and ongoing development.
    • Maintain a balanced life.
  7. Mix with Contribute to the Community
    • Create opportunities to integrate herself and the children in to the surrounding community.
    • Be familiar with local cultures
    • Be an active contributing member of the Village Community and the Village staff team.
  8. Understand the SOS Organisation
    • Become familiar with the background, philosophy, principles, policies and structure of the SOS organization.
    • Understand the different roles of the SOS staff team members.
    • Be ready to share the SOS story with visitors, quests and others interested person.
    • Partake and take a lead in fundraising activities

 9. CHILD AND YOUTH SAFEGUADING RESPONSIBILITY

      “Child and Youth Safeguarding is everybody’s business”

     As an SOS employee, it is your responsibility to champion the effective implementation of the following Child and Youth               Safeguarding principles in your work area:

  • Complete all Child and Youth Safeguarding related courses
  • Raising Awareness of Child and Youth Safeguarding
  • Identifying and Mitigating Safeguarding Risks
  • Prioritizing Children’s Best interest
  • Promoting a reporting Culture

    Qualifications

  • Minimum academic qualifications- Form 5
  • Able to speak English and Sesotho (written and spoken)
  • Added advantage if previously worked with children
  • Basic computer skills (word, excel, use of browser)
  • Certificate in Psycho Social Support certificate, Early Childhood Education and any other Healthcare-Related Qualifications will be added advantage
