Established in 1949, SOS Children's Villages International (CVI) is a dynamic, international social development organization working globally to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children without parental care and those who are at the risk of losing it.

SOS Children’s Villages Liberia is an affiliate of the SOS Children Villages International. It is non-governmental, non-political, non-denominational, and non-racial. Its overall mission is to build families for children in need, help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities. To realize the mission of the organization, SOS CV Liberia is recruiting a National Director who will lead the organization.

 

NATIONAL DIRECTOR SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE LIBERIA (Job Ref: SOS/14/05/26)

Position title:            National Director

Working location:     Monrovia, Liberia

Supervisor:           Transition and Operations Manager

Direct Reports: All Functional Heads.

Type of employment contract: Three years - Full time fixed term contract

Mission of the position:

The National Director ensures the effective overall direction, operations and performance of the National Association (NA), by developing and executing core programme and financial strategies that lead to the sustainability of the organization. The National Director leads and develops the NA with the support from leadership and national management team, to ensure effective delivery of programmes and services to children, families and communities within the frame of the NA’s vision, mission and values.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Strategic Direction, Governance and financial management

  • Establish, guide, direct and oversee the strategic plan and implementation of NA Liberia to advance the mission and objectives and promote sustainability and growth of the organization, in line with global strategic plan and country context.
  • Lead the establishment of effective national management systems, structures, governance systems and ensure the necessary legally binding statutory requirements are fulfilled.
  • Ensure solid financial management process compliant with donors and organizational policies and oversee logistics, procurement and other day to day operational systems.
  • Identify and address problems and opportunities central to business success timeously and solve critical issues at highest levels.
  • Act as the NA’s legal representative in the country and at affiliations, functions and events.
  • Ensure the NA has effective budget preparation and monitoring, and internal control and financial reports and the implementation of recommendations from audits
  • Ensure effective asset optimization in the National Association and provide oversight to construction projects.

 

Risk and compliance management

  • Lead by example in organizational ethics and standards, and take strong action against non-adherence to values, ethics and codes.
  • Continuously identify, assess and evaluate risks that could impact organizational objectives (political, social, technological, financial, operational, safety/security and environmental, and regulatory compliance risks and lead the development of necessary mitigation actions, proactively communicate major risks to SOS CVI
  • Champion safeguarding culture and setting the tone at the top by prioritizing programme participants, staff and Assets in all organizational activities
  • Oversee the implementation of effective compliance, monitoring and auditing systems aligned to agreed standards.
  • Ensure the power of Attorney signed agreement with SOS CVI is understood and implemented across all projects / programmes.

Fund Development, Communication and strategic partnerships

  • Ensure a strong strategic partnership including building and maintaining relationships with major institutional donors, corporates, foundations, and individual donors and government to ensure enduring business associations to assist in achieving strategic objectives.
  • Lead the resource mobilization strategy by overseeing grant acquisition, donor servicing, and compliance, ensuring all efforts align with organizational priorities and humanitarian needs.
  • Develop and maintain a positive corporate image with both internal and external stakeholders (including media) to ensure positive response to, perception and trust of the MA.
  • Establish sound relationships with relevant government authorities and guide the pursuit of advocacy objectives with NGO Child rights forums and in partnership with other NGOs.
  • Represent the MA in the relevant national and regional governments, forums, as well as other key partners / stakeholders' forums.

People Management and Development

  • Ensure effective management of people and talent in the organization, ensure the right policies, systems and processes are in place to ensure effective talent management and development
  • Ensure that all human resource management decisions are consistent with local laws
  • Ensure that the standards of the Human Resources Manual and the internal regulations are implemented
  • Ensure the professional recruitment, orientation, performance management and on-going development of national office management staff, build effective leadership team for the NA.
  • Assure stable employee relations by managing conflict and creating a positive working environment.
  • Oversee workforce planning to ensure team is suitably staffed to meet objectives considering various internal and external factors.
  • Ensure that the organizational culture is maintained and that employees live the values of the MA.
  • Oversee the sound management of all resources and leading organization safety and security operations by being responsible for the overall safety and security of an organization's personnel, assets, and operations. and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and international reporting and auditing requirements.

 

Federation GSC coordination, Innovation, Transformation

  • Evaluate/ Initiate the need for change and transformation initiatives in anticipation of industry, National and International priorities.
  • Propose and present new innovative ideas for the MA to SOS CVI and identify opportunities to leverage from partners and other networks.

 

  • Ensure clear and timely communication between SOS CV Liberia and SOS CVI adhering to reporting requirements and maintaining efficient communication channels.
  • Participate in SOS CVI Meetings and Forums and support international initiatives to promote exchange of experiences, information, and resources.

Child Safeguarding (CS) and PSHEA

  • Responsible for implementation and management of SOS Child Protection Policy and for reporting to the IO safeguarding team.
  • Ensures that co-workers and programmes complie with Child Protection Policy, Code of Conduct, PSHEA regulations and other safeguarding related requirements and do not cause harm to children and young people and that they are not exposed to the risk of harm and abuse
  • Responsible for reporting any concerns the organization has about children’s safety in its programmes and within the communities to the appropriate authorities 

 

Requirements; Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Master’s degree in development studies, project management, social sciences, Business Administration, or any related field
  • Minimum of 10 years’ work experience of which at least 5 years are at senior management level.
  • Experience of working in non-profit sector, preferably in the field of childcare or similar.
  • Extensive experience in Business Development, programme management, resource mobilisation and budgeting.
  • Good understanding of child rights, development programmes, and advocacy strategies. (combines knowledge of policies, programmes, education, and advocacy).
  • Fluent in English, with intercultural sensitivity to build bridges and thrive in diverse environments.
  • Skilled in grant writing, donor stewardship, and public sector funding, demonstrating strong financial acumen (combines fundraising, resources mobilisation, budgeting, and financial principles).
  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills to represent the organization and build strong teams.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Collaborative Developer: Builds strong teams by fostering learning, providing mentorship, and creating a culture of continuous improvement.
